You must have thought I'd given up, but no: recently - Pella. An overcast, hot and misty day, but a joyous trip to another astonishing piece of history. Dug up by Australian archeologists for 30 years now, this dusty Roman site sits above the fertile Jordan valley, providing the most stunning visual contrasts. See what you think!
In the not-very-distance is Israel.
Returned, for some cooling forest air, via Ajloun, whose wonderful castle (which seems to be the first picture rather than the last) can be seen from miles around

It looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOh to live amongst Ancient History.
How strange the lives of Roman legionnaires must have been - elegant exile from torrid Rome.
Sandra, I have been worrying - will you milk your goats for cappuccini or is it what we call 'Turkish' coffee?
You will need a waiter once things get going and let's face it, Leila will have other lambs to barbecue.
Ian
Sandra, not to nag but what will you do with your goats as you sit in your dusty plastic chair talking to your customers and drinking coffee?

ReplyDeleteHow did you ever get away?
I am going away for two weeks and it is giving me tete blanche (I just made that French idiom up - I hope it doesn't already exist and mean something ghastly. No use knowing another language and not using it; I feel confident you feel the same about Jordanese).
Sandra, I don't want to nag but is that donkey sweet or are they all as nasty as I've heard? Does s/he still wake you up?
And where did you find the cello? Is it a Strad bought by a Prince and cast aside in a fit of ennui?
How marvellous. What do they play?
I am flying into the unknown. As usual it has proved impossible to book accommodation in the far flung parts of the Solomons. I mean they have all these rest houses and mother's union places advertised on the internet but either they maildaemon back or meet one's emails with utter silence. I have a horror of them fighting over me at the airstrip as, in an attempt to get a roof over my head, I've emailed as many as I can in the one area.
Sorry. I'd sleep on the beach if I weren't so afraid of alligators and anopheles mosquitoes and starving.
I shall stock up on tinned food in Honiara, the World Capital of tinned food.
Sydney is heavenly at the moment.
What have I done?
It's just that if I don't go to Rennell Island and its World Heritage listed Lake Tenganu (don't quote me on the spelling) I never will, as I believe you need knees to manage.
Stay wonderful and always remember: They're there to do what they're told.
Ian
hi mum, miss you terribly, Pella looks amazing, and the view across that wonderful valley is spectacular. Hope I can talk to you soon.
ReplyDeleteLove you,
Leila
